Ross Lancaster

I am a creative writer and freelance journalist based in Saigon. My writing primarily focuses on underground music, art, and culture, helping highlight the importance of creative communities and the hard-working people behind the scenes.

Also, as I'm from a working-class household and area in the North of England, I'm interested in documenting the struggles that exist because of socioeconomic structures.

I have a 1st class degree in Law from Nottingham Trent University, and I'm currently working as a creative copywriter at The Color Club in Saigon.

Gonno - JIN 08 · Single Review ⟋ RA

Sunao Gonno produces from the heart. His tracks glow with a rosy melancholy that could equally serve peak Panorama Bar or sunset sessions at Tempelhof. He's My Bloody Valentine and Ryuichi Sakamoto as influences, so his penchant for creating shimmering cloudlike cuts should come as no surprise. With his new EP,, Gonno stays true to form, picking up where he left off with his " " remix for the Taiwanese imprint, delivering dreamy, utopian house alongside a surprisingly crunchy techno left turn. A

Ethnographic futurism • Recollecting Asia’s past through Sunju Hargun’s musical journey | Minimal Collective

Seasoned revellers will be able to relate to Sunju's De School moment. These experiences are often why people fall in love with dancefloors in the first place. But as society's obsession with technology has grown, many believe such magical happenings are disappearing. Jump into today's online discourse, and artists like Chloé Robinson, formerly Barely Legal, say phones are killing the dancefloor, with even bolder statements about the scene from veterans like MatrixxMan. That's why it's refreshin

Organik Festival 2023 • A harmonic intertwining of nature and music | Minimal Collective

Organik Festival is the brainchild of the subliminal podcast, events program, and label, Smoke Machine. With the likes of DJ Nobu, Efdemin, and Prince of Denmark having graced the mix series, it's no surprise the festival has built a reputation for showcasing the purest forms of techno. However, Organik's careful curation encompasses more than four-to-floor rhythms. It considers how nature and music intersect to enhance experiences, and has equally become known for creating a much-loved space fo

Rắn Cạp Đuôi - *1 · Album Review ⟋ RA

Emerging from the humid heat of Ho Chi Minh City, Rắn Cạp Đuôi is a collective of Robert Fripp-inspired experimentalists and meme enthusiasts. The band's playful attitude cross-pollinates genres with traditional Vietnamese instruments and a massive dose of Throbbing Gristle bullishness. Phạm Thế Vũ, Đỗ Hoàng Tuấn Anh, Spencer Nguyen and Zach Sch make up a roster that, since 2015, has constantly shape-shifted through collaborations with a revolving door of Vietnamese artists, writing compositions

Two lovers at sunset in Vietnam … Maika Elan’s best photograph

I learned photography through workshops and forums in Hanoi, Vietnam. This is where I fell in love with documentary-style photography. It had a creative freedom I couldn’t find in other forms. Feeling inspired, in the summer of 2010 I went to a documentary workshop in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Participants had seven days to come up with a project, and five days in I was the only one who didn’t have any pictures. My idea was to do something around culture, and while researching this, I came across a

10 Artists and Labels in Asia to Watch Out For in 2022

House and techno may have their beginnings in the sweltering warehouses of Detroit and Chicago, but its influence has spread far and wide. In Asia, the biggest continent in the world, there is an array of vibrant underground cultures where creative minds are coming together and expressing themselves through their own interpretations of sound on the electronic spectrum. This generation of artists is inspired by the visual and cultural senses embedded within their cities and beyond.

The one const

A flashback to Studio Adventure's NYE Odyssey reveals a new generation of Vietnamese DJs

Whilst the rest of the world awoke from a year of lockdowns in the spring of 2021, Vietnam entered its most challenging period. The bustling, chaotic streets, which are normally alive with millions of whizzing motorbikes and the infinite orchestra of construction, all stopped. Everything went quiet. Streets became barricaded; the army helped deliver food, and the rights of everyone were restricted to ensure the COVID-19 spike was halted. The strategy was harsh, and especially more so while watch

Hù Project Is Bringing The Underworld To Saigon’s Art Scene

When I arrived at Hù Project’s latest event, Karma, the veranda of the Meander Saigon Hotel was abuzz with effortlessly cool artists chatting away in anticipation for their retribution. The attendants were potential souls of the underworld, playfully making our descent through three different levels of hell: love, materialism, and ego. The exhibit started on the rooftop bar. As I sipped away on a sugary pre-show cocktail, the city skyline cast an ambient light on this young, hip crowd. I was mom

Snug celebrates 5 years as Hanoi's queerest club night

One of the best parties in Vietnam returned on Saturday. Sure, best is subjective — but have you ever been to a queer party in Vietnam? Described as being a party that welcomes the fabulous, the dancers, the kissers, the huggers, the homos, the queers, the posers and the bitches, Snug parties are decadence and debauchery all packaged up in one music-driven extravaganza. Vietnam is slowly waking up after months of hard lockdowns, which like many other countries, really shook the industry, and man
